As publishers continue to push the boundaries of books, augmented reality has presented itself as a unique opportunity to showcase non-fiction content in a way that helps children interact, connect, and gain a deeper understanding. In 2018, Lerner Publishing Group began researching augmented reality. A year and a half later, Lerner has published our first eight-book print series with a companion augmented reality app.

This case study will be an examination of Lerner’s experience developing an augmented reality app that is triggered by companion print books – the ideation, intention, development, design, pitfalls, tips and tricks, and reception from children. Complete with samples and an interactive interlude, attendees will walk away with a general understanding of augmented reality, how it can benefit children’s non-fiction books, and how they could pursue it at their own publishing companies.
